About

Alpha Geoscience specialises in managing and undertaking surveys for remediation of land contaminated with Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) and other remnants of military activity, with surveys being undertaken in Australia, South East Asia, USA, Europe and other parts of the world over the last 12 years. The Managing Director, Timothy Pippett has over 40 years’ experience specialising in the application of geophysical techniques for locating UXO targets.

Standard Survey Methodology

  1. Visual Search- A visual search of the site is performed to locate any easily visible UXO and/or other metallic items that will produce a target in subsequent searches, and to assess any potential hazards specific to the site.
  2. Shallow Search- a shallow search is performed by trained personnel under the supervision of our EOD Technician, using Minelab F3 Mine Detectors to detect and remove any UXO present near the surface.
  3. Deep Search- a deep search is conducted by trained personnel under the supervision of a Geophysicist, using either magnetometers or electromagnetic instruments to detect larger, deeper items.
  4. Target Investigation- After the deep search, target investigation is undertaken by the EOD Technician with the help of field assistants and if necessary an excavator.
  5. Reporting and Clearance Certificate provided.

Information For Developers

Many developers and environmental consultants are unaware that large areas of Australia, not just overseas countries have the potential for contamination with Unexploded Ordnance (UXO). The potential risk to life posed by UXO means that it is the responsibility of upper management to ensure that the possibility of UXO contamination is considered, ideally during the early stages of planning to minimise the safety risk and cost of your project. Areas with UXO contamination are present in every state in Australia including some built up areas. For a relatively small cost Alpha Geoscience can assess the risk of UXO for your site as part of your due diligence.
