| Ground Penetrating Radar Data Collection and Presentation for Road Construction Evaluation |
|
The evaluation of compliance to construction standards or life cycle auditing of materials is a problem facing most local and state government authorities. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) can be an effective tool in the development of maintenance and monitoring regimes. Utilising the technique for both small and large scale road sections can gain the asset owner a wealth of information. Depending on the size of and requirement of the project differing approaches can be taken. If the area is small and road access is able to be gained it may be more beneficial to use a hand walked instrument deployment. However if the area is large and data collection needs to be done with minimal road disruption a trailered system may prove more useful. Depending on the detail required by the client a number of antennas may need to be deployed. Alpha Geoscience can mobilise up to four antenna frequencies at the same time, this again depends on the detail and road speed required.
Data is collected from a section of road, is correlated, processed and interpretations made. Construction layers can be traced, services highlighted and changes in construction noted. All of the features highlighted are able to be superimposed onto data profiles, see images below, for final interpretations. The required information can be presented as profile drawings with areas of noncompliance and required features highlighted, as shown in the final image presented.
